1.6" Pyrite Ammonite from Russia.  This Hecticoceras Ammonite has been replaced by Pyrite.  One side has been carved and polished to show the inner chambers, all filled with drusy Pyrite crystallization.  The outer shell is partially coated white.  Ammonites are an extinct group of marine animals related to the modern day squid.  The last of its surviving lines disappeared with the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, although this piece is much older.  As it grew, it added newer and larger chambers to the open end of the spiral.  Only the last and largest chamber was occupied by the living animal at any given moment.  A top notch fossil specimen for display and study from Mickhailov, Russia.
