This is one half of a sliced and polished 3 1/4 INCH (83mm) ammonite fossil with beautiful detailed spiral chambers inside the shell, and RED ammolite on the outside. This has been cut and both sides of the shell are polished. 69.1
This is a 100 million year old fossil that has been sliced and polished to reveal the amazing spiral shell.
Ammonites are the fossilized remains of squid-like animals which existed from 420 million years ago till the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period, 65 million years ago. It is believed that the structure of the shell was strong enough to withstand water pressures down to 500 meters.
Fantastic as a collector's specimen! From Madagascar; the ammonite shell pattern is still seen today in shells of other mollusks. It is also widely used in designs and Motifs. The spiraling chambers are a master design based on a mathematical formula with each chamber being exactly 1.6 time larger in volume than the previous.
