Additional Information

Trilobites were among the first complex life forms to evolve in primordial seas. Scientists believe they are the first creatures to develop eyesight on the planet. Trilobites are hard shelled, segmented creatures that first appeared on earth approximately 570 million years ago. They were the first creatures’ with a hard outer shell called an exoskeleton. They lived in pre-historic seas that dried up long ago due to natural geological processes. These Arthropods were the most adaptable creatures on Earth and existed for over 350 million years. Trilobites were abundant during the Cambrian and Ordovician periods. They spanned the Paleozoic Era (from about 570 to 225 million years ago) and eventually became extinct in the Permian period. They have no present day relatives.

Trilobites scavenged on the ancient sea floors like a modern day catfish. Some types of trilobites had advanced eyesight although many were blind. The trilobite body was generally oval and flat. Trilobites are called trilobites because they have three “tri lobes. These lobes include the Cephalon (head section), the thorax (mid section) and the pygidium (tail section). The mid Thorax section is made up of a number of overlapping ribbed segments. Today, fossil evidence of these extinct creatures can be found worldwide.

Trilobites went extinct before the age of the dinosaurs. Trilobites were the first arthropods, a phylum of hard-shelled creatures with multiple body segments and jointed legs. They constitute an extinct class of arthropods made up of nine orders, over 150 families, about 5000 genera, and an estimated 20,000 species. New species of trilobites are found every year. Today, scientists and hobbyists use Trilobites as trace fossils to help determine the age of certain rock formations.
