One item for bid. Low, .99 cent starting bid! From the Eocene epoch, this fossil specimen is from the Green River Shale Formation in Wyoming. Related to the present day Herring, this fossil fish became extinct over 50 million years ago. Scientists believe that about 50 million years ago, there was a volcanic disturbance that caused the mass extinction in a lake that measured about 20 x 50 miles long. The fish and remains of other life forms were quickly covered with silt, mud and calcium carbonate. This slowed the decay process and allowed the fine detail of the fish to be well preserved.
