This is your chance to own a piece of paleontological history with your very own cast of a skull from Velociraptor! This piece is cast in a hydrostone and has a small hanger mounted in the back for wall hanging. The matrix (the cast rock it sits in) is 8"x4", and the skull is 6&1/2" long. You will never find a real Velociraptor skull that costs anywhere near this price, as they are too rare, incredibly expensive, and cannot be legally removed from Mongolia! History: Velociraptor became a household name thanks to the JurassicPark films, but was very different in reality. The real Velociraptor stood only at about 2&1/2 feet tall, 6 feet long, and weighed at around 50 lbs. It was also covered with thick proto-feathers, which was very typical for small carnivorous dinosaurs of the time (late Cretaceous, 75 million years ago). Its full name, Velociraptor mongoliensis, translates to "Quick thief of Mongolia." Velociraptor was originally discovered by a fossil hunting team lead by Roy Chapman Andrews, world famous explorer of the AmericanMuseum of Natural History (and the real life model for Indiana Jones) in the Central Asiatic Expeditions of the 1920's. Velociraptor is part of the family of dinosaurs called dromaeosaurs (also commonly referred to as "the raptors"), which are believed to share a common ancestor with birds. One particular Velociraptor find depicted an adult Velociraptor locked in combat with a neighboring plant-eating dinosaur called Protoceratops. This, to date, is the only paleontological find that involved two dinosaurs that died locked in combat, most likely covered in a sandstorm. This skull is cast from a specimen found in the Djadochta Formation of Mongolia. Happy Bidding! The cast specimen featured in this picture may vary slightly in coloration from the one you will receive. Shipping costs depends on weight and destination. I can assure you though that I always choose the cheapest shipping method unless asked otherwise by the buyer.
